Room Two: Portrait photography

Topic: The portrait photographer Adolf Elnain (1877 - 1945), a maternal grandfather, was one of the pioneers of a new kind of art photography. In contrast to the artificial court photography of the time, he wanted his portraits to show the individual personality of those portrayed. To this end, he held long conversations to get to know the characters of his customers and used the platinotype as a printing process. Adolf Elnain maintained studios in Bad Homburg, Wiesbaden and Düsseldorf, the largest of which was in the ‘Vier Jahreszeiten’ hotel on Wilhelmstrasse in Wiesbaden. He painted portraits of artists and personalities from the aristocracy, politics and industry, including the German crown prince, the crown princess, Gerhart Hauptmann, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Chaim Weizmann and Hugo Stinnes. On the occasion of his 100th birthday in 1977, the Museum Wiesbaden dedicated the exhibition ‘Adolf Elnain (1877 - 1945) - A Wiesbaden Portrait Photographer’ to him (Download Elnain-Katalog hier ).

Room Three: Oriental carpets

Topic: Reinhart von Oettingen (1876 - 1952), a grandfather on his father's side, was drafted into the Russian army in Tbilisi as a German-Balt. There he came into contact with oriental carpets and found the subject of his life. After his military service, he stayed and travelled the Caucasus and Central Asia in search of Persian, Caucasian and Turkmen knotted carpets. He became a recognised carpet expert and founded ‘Reinhart von Oettingen's Persian Carpet Trade in Berlin with a branch in Taebriz in Persia’. In 1910, he self-published ‘Masterpieces of Oriental Knotting’. The work, consisting of 60 colour plates with a short explanatory text and a map of the regions of origin, is regarded as an early pioneering work on nomadic and peasant carpets of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Room Four: Painting

Topic: The self-portrait and easel indicate this: Room Four is dedicated to the painter Gerhart von Oettingen (1913 - 2007, gerhartvonoettingen.de ) dedicated.

‘Until the 1980s, the artist only worked figuratively, but then he began to increasingly break down his landscape paintings into coloured components - until circles and squares began to dominate his pictures, playing only with the surface, negating a top and bottom. Simplification, abbreviation, simplicity - these are the key words with which Gerhart von Oettingen's painterly work can best be identified.’
